Whether it’s for the fresh air and exercise, or avoidance of unreliable and overpriced public transport, many of us enjoy cycling to work.
Of course, in more recent years the sale of e-bikes and e-scooters have increased considerably and are now familiar sights on the commute.
Due to the hefty price tag of our easy riders, they’re very appealing to thieves so traditional unsecured bike sheds in the far corner of work car parks are not always used. Lots of managers allow their employees to lock their e-bikes/scooters against downpipes and railings on their buildings or even in communal areas of the workplace for “safety” not realising this is a fire hazard.
As viewed in footage from all over the globe, lithium-ion batteries can and do start fires. Just a few months ago, there was cctv recordings doing the rounds of an e-bike on a busy underground train station platform exploding!
On National Cycle to Work Day 2024, we’re calling all business owners, Facilities Managers, H&S officers to stop and think about the danger such equipment brings to your workplace and ensure this is considered in your fire safety regime.
Stay safe on the roads and in your workplace!
